General Considerations

Moving Around - Dragging the mouse across your desktop will cause the cursor (arrow, hand, hourglass, etc.) to change it to a different symbol (hand) every time it encroaches a "linked" site. The link can be in form of a picture or a underlined word or sentence. Clicking while this symbol is display will again change the cursor to an hourglass symbol indicating that the particular site is being accessed.

Loading Time - The time that it takes for the site to fully display on your desktop varies depending on many factors, starting with the speed and power of your own computer and modem to those of your provider. Internet traffic and physical distance between sites also contribute to the connect speed, or lack of it. Many of Italy at St. Louis ™ sites are in fact in Italy, therefore, you may expect further delays than usual. Be patient...

Browser - As the name suggests, this is what allows you to navigate through the Internet. The two most common versions are made by Netscape (Navigator) or Microsoft (Internet Explorer). Large Internet access providers may supply their own or customize one of the two products above. If you take the time to learn its navigational buttons it will make your life much easier and less frustrating. In most cases, just pointing at the buttons will give you a logical description of their function. We'll mention a couple of them here.

Links - Internet lingo for connections to other web sites. Italy at St. Louis ™ provides many such connections. Clicking on the "link" will switch your browser from Italy at St. Louis ™ to the new site.

Leaving Italy at St. Louis™ - You will do so everytime you click on a linked site. To come back use the "Back" button on your browser.

Navigating with Netscape

Back and Forward - Lets you retreat to the previous pages you just visited and return back afterwards.

Home - Clicking on it brings you back to the default site for your browser. You can change this default if you wish.

Go - Lists the commands above plus shows the sites you have visited during the current session and allows you to jump from one to another by clicking on them.

Reload - Your computer memorizes (caches) the site you have visited so that the next time you go there it will attempt to retrieve them from its own memory rather than wait for the Internet to supply them to you. Clicking "Reload" will force retrieving from the Internet thus getting the latest version if changes to the site had been made.

Stop - Cancels your loading command. Useful when you change your mind on a site that takes forever to load.

Print - Sends the current page you are viewing to your printer.

Bookmarks - Provides shortcut for favorite sites. Click on "Bookmarks" and "Add Bookmark" while on the site you want to save. Next time you click "Bookmarks" you'll see your saved site. Click on it to jump right to it.

Options - Allows you to customize your desktop. Select/deselect toolbars to change size of viewable area.
